Age of the Earth
- The earth is generally believed to be four to five billion years old.
- Almost nothing is known about the conditions of the earth during the first one billion years before consolidation of its crust.
- Modern scientific methods for finding the age of the earth have been used for about two centuries.
Tidal Force Method
- The first tidal method is based on the idea that the moon was once very close to the earth and moved away slowly.
- On this basis, the age of the earth has been calculated as 4000 million or 4 billion years.
- The second tidal method uses the present rate of recession of the moon.
Methods Based on Rocks and Oceans
- The age of the sedimentary rocks has been calculated as 4 billion years by the sedimentation method.
- Scientists believe erosion could not have started for at least one billion years after the earth's birth, so the earth's age is about 5 billion years by this method.
- The rate of sedimentation per year is not the same every year and differs from place to place.
Radioactivity Method
- The radioactivity method is considered the most reliable and accurate method.
- Pierre Curie discovered in 1903 that radioactive elements are continuously disintegrated and generate heat.
- Rutherford suggested in 1904 that the age of rocks can be calculated on the basis of radioactive elements.
