Age of the Earth

  • The earth is generally believed to be four to five billion years old.
  • Almost nothing is known about the conditions of the earth during the first one billion years before consolidation of its crust.
  • Modern scientific methods for finding the age of the earth have been used for about two centuries.

Tidal Force Method

  • The first tidal method is based on the idea that the moon was once very close to the earth and moved away slowly.
  • On this basis, the age of the earth has been calculated as 4000 million or 4 billion years.
  • The second tidal method uses the present rate of recession of the moon.

Methods Based on Rocks and Oceans

  • The age of the sedimentary rocks has been calculated as 4 billion years by the sedimentation method.
  • Scientists believe erosion could not have started for at least one billion years after the earth's birth, so the earth's age is about 5 billion years by this method.
