  • The continental shelf is a slightly inclined, inundated zone that forms the border of a continent.

  • Submarine ridges are underwater mountain ranges a few hundred kilometres wide and several thousand kilometres long.
  • They form the longest mountain system on earth.
  • Most ridges are placed centrally in the oceans.

4. Submarine Trenches and Canyons

  • A trench is a long, narrow and steep-sided depression on the ocean floor.
  • Trenches are the deepest parts of the ocean bottom with a usual depth of 5,500 metres.
  • The deepest trench of the world is the Mariana Trench of the Guam Islands.
