- The term 'Geography' was coined by Greek scholar Eratosthenes (276–194 B.C.) in 234 B.C. He lived in Alexandria, Egypt.
- Literal meaning: 'To write about the Earth including all that appears upon it.'
- L.D. Stamp defined geography as 'the description of the Earth as the abode of human beings.'
Evolution of Geography — From Ancient Times to Modern Era
- Geography is often called the 'mother of all sciences' — its evolution mirrors the evolution of human civilisation.
- ANCIENT PERIOD: Atharva Veda (10th century B.C.) gave a detailed account of the known world. Indian Rishis travelled to Central Asia, East Asia, Southeast Asia, and Africa.
- Thales of Miletus (6th century B.C.) gave the size and shape of the Earth.
Geography as an Integrating Discipline — Relationship with Other Sciences
- Geography adopts a HOLISTIC approach — recognises interdependencies in the world.

Branches of Geography — Systematic and Regional Approaches
- Geography is studied from TWO PERSPECTIVES: Systematic (General) and Regional.
- SYSTEMATIC GEOGRAPHY: Introduced by ALEXANDER VON HUMBOLDT (German, 1769–1859). Studies one geographical factor across the world or a part of it. Also called 'topical approach.'
- REGIONAL GEOGRAPHY: Developed by KARL RITTER (German, 1779–1859). Studies a particular region with reference to ALL geographical elements.
