  • A well is a hole dug, bored, or drilled to obtain ground water.
  • An intermittent well reaches only the zone of intermittent saturation and may dry up in the dry season.
  • A permanent well reaches the zone of permanent saturation and supplies water throughout the year.

  • A spring is a natural flow of water from the earth's surface.
  • A spring may issue strongly or may ooze or seep out.
  • Springs usually occur where permeable and impermeable rocks meet, or where joints and fissures allow water to escape.

4. Karst Topography and Erosional Landforms

  • Karst topography is a limestone area where underground water is more effective.
  • The name Karst comes from a province of Yugoslavia on the Adriatic sea coast.
  • Other Karst regions include English Chalk Country, the Causse of France, Yukatan of Mexico, and parts of the USA such as Indiana, Colorado, Tennessee, and Virginia.
