  • The word erosion comes from the Latin word erodere, which means to gnaw.
  • River erosion can be physical or chemical.
  • Hydraulic action is caused by the pressure and drag of flowing water on grains projecting from the bed and banks.

  • The upper or mountain course begins at the source in hills or mountain areas.
  • The river has high velocity and maximum erosive power in the upper course.
  • Gorge is a narrow, steep-sided valley formed by strong downcutting in hard rocks.
