Topics in Electric Potential and Capacitors

1

Electric Potential and Potential Difference

  • Electric potential at a point is the work done against the electric force in bringing a unit positive charge from infinity (outside the field) to that point.
  • Electric potential is a scalar quantity — it has magnitude only, no direction.
  • Potential difference between two points A and B: V_AB = V_B - V_A = W_AB / q₀, where W_AB is work done and q₀ is the test charge.
2

Electric Potential Due to a Dipole

  • An electric dipole consists of two equal and opposite charges +q and -q separated by distance 2l, with dipole moment p = q × 2l directed from -q to +q.
  • Potential at a point P at distance r from centre, making angle θ with dipole axis: V = p cosθ / (4πε₀ r²).
  • Unlike point charge potential (∝ 1/r), dipole potential is proportional to 1/r².
3

Relation Between Electric Field and Potential

  • Electric field at a point equals the negative rate of change of potential with distance: E = -ΔV/Δr.
  • The negative sign shows work is done against the field when potential increases.
  • For a uniform field: E = (V_A - V_B) / d, where d is the separation between points A and B.
4

Capacitance and Capacitors

  • A capacitor consists of two conductors (plates) with equal and opposite charges ±Q, separated by a potential difference V.
  • Capacitance C = Q/V — the ratio of charge to potential difference. It is independent of Q or V individually.
  • SI unit of capacitance: farad (F). 1 F = 1 C/V. Common units: microfarad (μF = 10⁻⁶ F) and picofarad (pF = 10⁻¹² F).
