- Oxides are binary compounds of oxygen with metals or non-metals.
- They are classified based on acid-base behavior: acidic, basic, amphoteric, and neutral oxides.
- Acidic oxides are formed by non-metals and react with bases to form salt and water.
Ozone and its Properties
- Ozone (O₃) is an allotrope of oxygen with a bent/V-shaped structure.
- It is prepared by passing oxygen through a silent electric discharge (Siemens ozonizer).
- Ozone is a powerful oxidizing agent and unstable, decomposing to O₂.
Sulphuric Acid – Manufacture and Properties
- Manufactured by Contact Process using V₂O₅ catalyst.
- SO₂ is produced by burning sulfur or roasting pyrites.
- SO₂ is oxidized to SO₃ at 720K and 2 atm pressure using V₂O₅.
Hydrogen Halides and Oxoacids of Chlorine
- Hydrogen halides: HF, HCl, HBr, HI — acidity increases down the group: HF < HCl < HBr < HI.
- HF has high boiling point due to hydrogen bonding.
- HCl prepared by NaCl + H₂SO₄ or direct combination of H₂ and Cl₂.
