1. Europe after the Fall of Rome

  • The Roman Empire was divided into Western and Eastern territories.
  • The Western Roman Empire fell in 476 AD after attacks by Germanic tribes such as the Goths, Vandals, Visigoths and Franks.
  • Constantine set up a new capital in Byzantine in 330 AD; it was later called Constantinople.

2. Feudalism in Medieval Europe

  • Feudalism was the main political and social system in medieval Europe.
  • It was a graded or hierarchical system of political authority.
  • At the top stood the king, followed by dukes and earls, then barons, then knights.

3. Feudal Economy, Agriculture and Crisis

  • The period before the 10th century had low economic life, weak trade, weak towns and poor agriculture.
  • Barter was widely used because money exchange was limited.
  • A heavier plough with wheels, drawn by oxen, improved cultivation of heavy Northern European soil.

4. Arab Civilisation and the Rise of Islam

  • Before Islam, most Arabs were Bedouins, or wandering camel herdsmen.
  • Arabia was a desert peninsula with limited farming and trade before Islam.
  • Mecca became important because it lay at the junction of major trade routes and had the Kabah shrine.
