SI Units and Need for Mole

  • The mole (mol) is the SI unit for the amount of substance.

Avogadro's Constant and Mole

  • One mole of any substance contains exactly 6.022 × 10²³ elementary entities (atoms, molecules, ions, or formula units).
  • This number is known as Avogadro's constant (Nₐ).
  • The mole is defined as the amount of substance that contains as many particles as there are atoms in exactly 12 g of carbon-12.

Atomic, Molecular, and Molar Mass

  • Atomic mass is the mass of one atom expressed in atomic mass units (amu).
  • Molecular mass is the sum of atomic masses in a molecule, also in amu.
  • Molar mass is the mass of one mole of a substance in grams per mole (g/mol).

Mole, Mass, and Number Relationships

  • The number of moles (n) is calculated as mass (m) divided by molar mass (M): n = m/M.
  • Mass can be found using m = n × M.
  • Number of particles = n × Nₐ.
