Topics in p-block Elements and their Compounds - I

1

Boron and Its Compounds

  • Boric acid (H₃BO₃) is prepared by reacting borax with sulfuric acid: Na₂B₄O₇ + H₂SO₄ + 5H₂O → Na₂SO₄ + 4H₃BO₃
  • Boric acid is a weak Lewis acid, not a protonic acid. It accepts OH⁻ from water: B(OH)₃ + 2H₂O ⇌ [B(OH)₄]⁻ + H₃O⁺
  • On heating, boric acid forms metaboric acid and then boric oxide (B₂O₃)
2

Aluminium and Double Salts

  • Aluminium trichloride exists as dimer Al₂Cl₆ with two chlorine atoms forming dative bonds to complete octet
  • Anhydrous AlCl₃ is a Lewis acid catalyst in Friedel-Crafts reactions
  • Alums are double salts with general formula M⁺M³⁺(SO₄)₂·12H₂O where M⁺ = K⁺, NH₄⁺ and M³⁺ = Al³⁺, Cr³⁺, Fe³⁺
3

Carbon and Silicon Compounds

  • Diamond has sp³ hybridized carbon atoms in a 3D tetrahedral network; graphite has sp² hybridized carbon in layers
  • Graphite conducts electricity due to delocalized electrons; diamond does not
  • CO is neutral and reducing; CO₂ is acidic and forms carbonates with bases
4

Nitrogen Compounds and Fertilizers

  • Ammonia is prepared by Haber's process: N₂ + 3H₂ ⇌ 2NH₃ (Fe catalyst, 750K, 200 atm)
  • Ammonia is a Lewis base due to lone pair on nitrogen; forms complexes like [Cu(NH₃)₄]²⁺
  • Nitric acid is prepared by Ostwald process: NH₃ → NO → NO₂ → HNO₃
