Q: What is Avogadro's constant? Give its value.
A: Avogadro's constant (Nₐ) is the number of particles in one mole of a substance. Its value is 6.022 × 10²³ mol⁻¹.
Q: How many atoms are in 1 mole of carbon?
A: 1 mole of carbon contains 6.022 × 10²³ atoms.
Q: What is the difference between a mineral and an ore?
A: A mineral is a naturally occurring substance in which a metal or its compound exists. An ore is a mineral from which a metal can be extracted economically. All ores are minerals, but not all minerals
Q: Why do noble metals like gold and silver occur in the native state?
A: Noble metals have low reactivity and show little affinity for air, moisture, CO₂, or other non-metals. Hence, they remain in the elemental or free state in nature.
Q: Name two metals that occur in nature as sulphides and two as oxides.
A: Sulphides: Zinc (ZnS), Lead (PbS). Oxides: Iron (Fe₂O₃), Aluminium (Al₂O₃·2H₂O).
Q: Define environment.
A: Environment refers to the biotic and abiotic surroundings with which living organisms interact. It includes air, water, soil, living organisms, and energy.
Q: What are the two components of environment?
A: The two components are: (i) Abiotic components – air, water, soil, energy, radiation; (ii) Biotic components – microbes, plants, animals.
Q: List three biotic components of environment.
A: Examples of biotic components: bacteria, algae, and plants.
