Card 1Work

What is work in science?

Answer

Work is done when force is applied on a body and the body moves through some distance in the direction of the force.

Card 2Zero work

When is work done equal to zero if a force is applied?

Answer

If a force is applied on a body and the body does not move, no work is done at all. Example: pushing a wall.

Card 3Work and direction

Why is no work done when force and displacement are perpendicular?

Answer

If the force and displacement are perpendicular to each other, the work done by the force is zero. Only the part of displacement in the direction of the force contributes to work.

Card 4Work formula

How is work calculated when force and displacement are in the same direction?

Answer

Work = force × displacement in the direction of the force.

Card 5Work formula

How is work calculated when force and displacement are in different directions?

Answer

W = F × PR, where PR is the projection of displacement in the direction of the force. The actual path PQ is not used for work in this case.

Card 6Units of work

What is the SI unit of work?

Answer

The SI unit of work is newton-metre (Nm) or joule (J).

Card 7Joule

What does 1 joule of work mean?

Answer

1 J of work is done when a body moves 1 m under a force of 1 N in the direction of the force.

Card 8Zero work examples

Why does a person carrying a load on the head on a level road do no work against gravity?

Answer

The load moves horizontally, so there is no displacement in the direction of gravitational force. Since force and displacement are perpendicular, work done against gravity is zero.
